What is a Budget and Why it's a Valuable Tool in Your Financial Planning Arsenal!

What is a budget? A budget is a vital tool for your financial plan. It is a financial breakdown of your income and spending in order for you to get a good picture of what your cash flow is and where your surplus will go.

Cash flow is the amount of money, positive or negative, you have left over after all of your personal expenses are paid during a given month. You want a positive cash flow in order to purchase or invest in assets to help achieve your goals throughout your financial plan.

Your budget is your guide through financial life. It determines how much you can spend, how much you are going to spend, when you are going to spend it, and how much you have left for saving and investing for the future. It also shows you where sacrifices must be made in order to turn your financial life around.

Determining your financial status starts with where your budget lies. Knowing exactly where your money is going is essential in the proper management of your budget.

The great thing about a budget is that it can be adjusted in order to meet your financial needs any time you need to adjust it. If you set a goal with a monetary value of $3,000, then you need to add that to your budget in order to foresee when you will achieve that goal in your plan.
